DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY.
AUCKLANDER'S SUCCESS. Dr. N. L. Edson, a former Aucklander, has been approved for the degree of doctor of philosophy in the subject of bio-chemistry. Dr. Edson, who is the son of the late Mr. Percival Edson and Mrs. Phoebe Edson, was educated at the Auckland Grammar School, where he won a junior national scholarship, a senior national scholarship, and a junior university entrance scholarship. At Otago University, he graduated M.8., Cli.B. and B.Med.Sc. prior to assuming a position of lecturer in the physiological depart-
ment of the Medical School for four years. At the close of this period he left for England, where he was engaged in post-graduate research in bio-chem-istry at Emmanuel College, Cambridge, under Sir Frederick Gowland Hopkins. Shortly after commencing hie studies at Cambridge he was awarded a Beit Fellowship, and quite recently he was approved for the degree of doctor of philosophy in bio-chemistry. Dr. Edson is also an ex-Otago, exNew Zealand University and ex-New Zealand representative in hockey. He is expected to return to New Zealand at the end of the year.
