SHOP ASSISTANTS' HOURS.
The Chamber of Commerce, through its secretary, Dr. Neale, has been passing its opinion on hours in industry. The poor old shop assistant, as usual, is coming in for criticism. The people in our shops have always been the Cinderellas as regards hours of work, and how the general public can countenance 10J hours a day, exclusive of meal hours, for girls or men, passes understanding. I have seen girls, also men, absolutely done after a hard Friday. Nine o'clock closing is absolutely unnecessary, and a start could be made by shutting all slumps at, 7.30 for a start, and gradually cutting down to 5.30. Shop assistants in general were bitterly disappointed with the provisions of the new Act, and feel that their efforts in helping to put their own party in power have been to a great extent wasted. The people who work in our shops are requested to be well educated and dress well, and taking all into account they work the worst hours and are the lowest paid of all the trades. SHOP ASSISTANT.
