CITY COUNCIL.
THE VACANT SEAT. BY-ELECTION PENDING. FOUR CANDIDATES IN FIELD. Four nominations have been received for the vacancy, on the City Council caused by the death of Mr. J. W. Yarnall. The election will be held on Wednesday, May 27. The candidates are as follow: — Mr. Gerald Bell, nominated by Messrs. H. D. Schmidt and J. R. Carlsen. Mr. William Lang Casey, nominated by Messrs. F. B. Cadman and S. H. Ley land. , Mr. James William Payne, nominated by Messrs. A. J. Thomas and H. Woodruffe. Mr. James Purtell, nominated by Messrs. P. Carr and J. T. Jennings. Mr. Casey is a former member of the council, and the other three candidates unsuccessfully contested the last municipal election in 1935. Mr. Purtell on that occasion had the largest number of votes amongst the Labour candidates that failed to win seats. Mr. Bell, who is described on the nomination papers as a company representative, is chairman of the Point Chevalier School Committee and a prominent member of the Point Che\aliei Sailing Club. Mr. Casey is a retired manufacturer. Mr. Payne is described as a labourer, and Mr. Purtell, the Labour party candidate, is the wellknown secretary of a number of trades unions. Candidates may, if they so wish, withdraw nomination, provided this is done before Tuesday, May 10. The polling on May ,27 will be conducted the hours of 9 a.m. and 7 p.m.
