AFIRE AT BERTH.

Frozen Meat Ship Bound for England. CREW'S FIGHT WITH FLAMES. SYDNEY, May 14. A fire on the Aberdeen and Commonwealth steamer Jervis Bay, berthed at Newcastle, extensively damaged the saloon galley and the starboard pantry, and minor damage occurred in the mess room and the butcher's shop amidships. Dense smoke hampered the crew's efforts to arrest the outbreak with chemical extinguishers, but when fire brigades arrived the firemen used smoke helmets and the Humes were soon under control. Steam pipes burst and some of the crew were burned. The Jervis Bay, loaded with frozen cargo from Brisbane, had arrived to-day en route to the United Kingdom.
