THE FORTY-HOUR WEEK.

The announcement by the Hon. H. T. Armstrong, Minister of Labour, that the introduction of the 40-hour week will be postponed for three months, and for a longer period in cases which have not been heard, will be welcomed by the community generally. Adherence to the date formerly announced, July 1, would liavo meant hardship to a number of employers, with possible reaction upon employment. There are many instances in which even a short period of restricted hours would have a crippling effect, but as a result of the concession now granted opportunity will be given for a case to be stated before the prejudgment which would have folloAved the earlier date. Applicants for extended hours entering the Court with a shorter week already in operation would find difficulty in presenting their case, if only from a psychological point of view, and the Minister has acted Avisely in delaying the clause.
