I WOMAN FOR SENTENCE. ! GUILTY OX TWO CHARGES. j (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) I CHRISTCHURCH, Thursday. A verdict of guilty 011 two charges of unlawfully using an instrument on two women, whose names Mr. Justice j Northcroft requested should not bo published, and not guilty on a similar charge in respect of Mrs. Catterina, Maria Hill, who died in the Christchurch Hospital on March 27, was returned by the jury in the Supreme Court to-day against Mrs. Rubena Shirley, of Alpha Road. Mr. F. D. Sargent appeared for accused, who was remanded for sentence. The prosecution called police evidence concerning the investigation of the death of Mrs. Hill. The Crown alleged that Mrs. Hill died following an illegal operation performed by the accused. Detective Duncan Mackenzie said that he and Detective Harding commenced investigating the death of Mrs. Hill 011 March 27. Witness and others called at accused's home at Alpha Road. Accused said she did not know Mrs. Hill and she denied knowledge of any 1 arrangement with the Hills to perform an operation. To questions concerning telephone calls to Greymouth and visits of Mr. and Mrs. Hill to her house, accused responded with denials. Later witness returned with a warrant for her arrest and told her she was to be taken into custody. Accused replied, "For something I know nothing about." His Honor: All her replies were negative? Witness: Yes. His Honor: Did you know any more when you decided to arrest her than before you asked your questions ? Witness replied that he had reported the result of his interrogation to Inspector Rawle and had been instructed to make the arrest. Mr. Sargent did not call evidence and counsel then addressed the jury.
