MARTHA COMPANY. i SUPERINTENDENT'S REPORT. A brief telegraphed summary of opera- • tions at the Martha Mine for the period ■ ended March 14 has already appeared in the "Star." The extended report of the L superintendent, Mr. H. W. Hopkins, has ' now become available, and follows:— ; _ MARTHA AREA. No. 14 Level.—Edward lode, Trout block: Truck sampling of the excess ore 1 drawn from this block averaged 23/2 per ton. Martha lode. Gin block: Ore break- . ing has been carried to 112 ft above tho , level and truck sampling of the brokeu ore drawn averaged 17/9 per ton. No. 13 Level. —Martha lode, Cow block: Ore breaking is in operation at 96ft above the level; the broken ore drawn averaged 'l 17/4 per ton. I No. 12 Level.—Royal lode, Reptile block: Ore breaking here is now at 91ft above the level; the broken ore drawn averaged 21/3 per ton. Ulster lode:» Ore breaking in Ulster block has been carried to 30ft above the level, where work is temporarily suspended pending an improvement to the ventilation. Martha lode, Webb east block: Further widening and, heightening has been done and 55ft of the ■ level timbered. Truck sampling j of the ore obtained from this work averaged IG/3 per ton. No. 11 Level.—Empire lode, north section, A. Harvey block: Ore breaking has been resumed in this block at 41ft above the level. Dreadnought lode, south branch, Bomb block: Ore breaking is in operation at 70ft above the level. Truck sampling of the broken ore drawn averaged 13/6 per ton. No. 10 Level. —Martha lode, Bullson block: Ore breaking is now at 19ft above the 67ft intermediate level. Truck sampling of the broken ore drawn averaged 32/7 per ton. Britannia block, extending from 95ft to 242 ft east of Britannia pass, has now beep widened throughout its entire length. No. 10 (30ft) Sub-Level. —Edward lode, Shark block: Ore breaking was commenced and is now at 20ft above the level. No. 9 Level. —Martha lode, Eoal block: Ore breaking has I)een carried to 48ft above the level. Truck sampling of the j broken ore drawn during the period averaged 28/6 per ton. | No. 9 (73ft) Up Level. —Martha lode, j north section: Work is now in progress preparatory to opening up a stoping block east and west of the 105 ft east crosscut. J Junction No. 7 Level. —Ulster lode, west of 875 ft west crosscut: Driving was continued to 339 ft. The average assay value_ during the period was 21/2 per ton over* an average width of 2%ft. A connection was made to Ulster winze at 305 ft. No. 8 (45ft) Sub-Level. —444 ft reef, Muirson block: Ore breaking in this block was suspended at 54ft up, owing to the value falling. The block is estimated to contain 601 tons of broken ore. No. 8 Level. —Roach west crosscut, from Edward lode, situated at 550 ft south-west of No. 2 shaft, was commenced and driven a total of 34ft. At 25ft the crosscut intersected sulphide ore 4ft wide assaying 105/1 per ton; course' 232deg (true), dip lin 1% west. This is probably the continuation of the west section of Edward lode. A south drive was commenced on the course of the vein and advanced to 10ft. the width at this point being of good grade. No. 7 Level. —Empire lode, Hicks' block: Ore breaking was completed in this block at 136 ft above the level. The block is estimated to contain 4783 tons of broken ore, which is now being drawn. Payne north, west crosscut: At 875 ft west of No. 2 shaft N.W. crosscut was continued to 132 ft, where the crosscut was stopped. Martha lode, north branch: West drive at 128 ft in Payne crosscut. A drive west was commenced on the Bin vein at 128 ft in, and continued to 83ft. The average assay value to 67ft is 23/11 ner ton, the width of quartz being about 12in. No. 6 Level. —H. branch reef: The west drive was continued to 180 ft, where it holed to former workings. The average assay value from 142 ft to 16Sft is 20/6 per ton. the width of the vein being about sft. Giddens south crosscut, situated at 100 ft west of Espir west crosscut, has been driven a total of 24ft in country. No. 5 Level.—Martha lode, west of No. ( 2 shaft, new N.W. crosscut: Driving was stopped at the 1046 ft point. At 1043 ft a crosscut was driven north Oft and south ll%ft. in a mixture of quartz and country of low value. Martha lode, north ] branch: Denby winze, situated under j Cornes' block in the 800 ft west crosscut, j lias been sunk 31% ft in ore of good grade , about 3%ft wide. The vein is dipping , very flatly to the north-west. Giddens ; winze ; situated at north end of 440 ft j crosscut, lias been sunk 40ft in good grade . ore about 2ft wide. Riley_ east block: , Ore breaking was completed in this block . at 83ft un. The block is estimated to ( contain 960 tons of broken ore. No. 4 Level.—Martha lode, north branch, at 181 ft in Gordon north crosscut: The western drive was continued to 179 ft, where work was stopped owing to the vein pinching. The face of the drive is within 25ft of former workings. At ( 145 ft west a crosscut was driven south a < total of 52ft, and in a further few feet < will connect with the north end of < Skinner crosscut. At 226 ft in Gordon f north crosscut, a drive was commenced on t a loop of the north branch and extended j west 7ft. Assay value at 6ft is 52/ per 1 ton. width of nuartz about 9in. No. 2 Level. —Bell reef, west of Hooper crosscut: The drive west on this vein was advanced 75ft, making a total of 207 ft. The average assay value from 132 ft to ] 207 ft is 23/10 ner ton, width of quartz ± being about l%ft. ( JUNCTION AREA. \

Junction No. 9 Level. —Empire lode, No. 10 pass block: 481 tons were drawn off, the average assay value being 19/5 per ton. Junction No. 8 Level. —Royal locle, No. 4 pass block: Stoping was commenced in this block and ore breaking is at 19ft above the level. Truck sampling of the broken ore drawn during the period averaged 25/6 per ton. Royal lode, Lowrie block: Truck sampling of the broken ore drawn during the period—393 tons —averaged 20/5 per ton. . Junction No. 7 Level.—Empire lode: Smith south crosscut was resumed and advanced 16% ft in country, making a total length of 106% ft. The crosscut was stopped at this point. Empire lode. Wells block south part: Ore breaking has been carried to 42ft above' the level. Truck sampling of the broken ore drawn averaged 32/9 per ton. An intermediate level was commenced from No. 18 pass at 63ft above the level and driven eastward 15% ft. The assay value at 10ft over. 6ft of quartz —no walls—is 35/4 per /ton. Nine feet was driven west, the average assay value for this distance being 39/6 per ton. no walls being seen at face. George lode, intermediate level at 80ft up George risa: Ward winze at 60ft west of the rise is down 50ft. The average assay value from 26ft to 46ft is 12/8 per ton, width of quartz about 2}ft. A rise at 100 ft west of No. 1 shaft S.E. crosscut will now be commenced from the main level, with the obi'ect of connecting to Ward winze. Junction No. 6 Level. —Royal lode, No_ 10 pass block: 358 tons were drawn off the west part of block, average of truck samnles being 32/7 per ton. South part of Royal, lode: Intermediate level at 55tt up Gibbons rise* The winze at 131 ft east has been sunk 34% ft. At No. 6 level, investigation is being made on this vein, and at 23ft west of Gibbons south crosscut an intermedittc level is being opened out at 25ft up. Dye rise, which has been driven 34% ft west and 12% ft east. Waihi Company's No. 9 Level.—lntermediate level at 28ft up: A good deal of broken ore was shovelled from No. 1 winze block during the period. Most of this ore had fallen from that part of th.? stope in the Martha area, and therefore belonged to that company.
