GLADIOLUS SOCIETY.
MONTHLY MEETING HELD. The ordinary monthly meeting of the Auckland Gladiolus Society was held in St. David's Church on Tuesday, Mr. C. p ' Worley presiding over a good attend- j ance of members. Two new members were elected. I It was decided to open a cormel fund: again this year, as the last one had been, of such benefit to the members in obtainin" new varieties at reasonable- prices, and some of the leading growers had promised to give support to the scheme for the cornill" year. A particular vote of thanks was passed to Mr. Burns, of Wanganui, for a donation of eorms of the latest introductions and valued at 15 guineas. lhe matter of distributing these and other corms donated was left in the hands of the executive committee. The members had been invited to bring alon" for comparison specimens of their] largest corms and also specimens of the best-shaped corms raised by them fiom last season's planting. The largest spec.-; •men corm was produced by Miss Whitelev, of Otahuhu, and the best shaped one by Mr G. K. Gilliam, of New Lynn. Reports received from members as to the increase iu stocb» of corms harvested this year showed Tnat the rate of increase was not nn to that of the previous year, and this was probably due to the very wet season Id was also reported that corms that were harvested at the usual time were in some instances beginning to sprout already" although the plantm? •several weeks ahead yet. I his was con sidered due to the corms not b elll S sufficiently ripened in the ground before lifting and the wet season.
