CYCLING.

BEACH HAVEN CLUB. Under ideal racing conditions, the Beach Haven Amateur Cycling Club conducted the second race of the season. Sixteen miles were covered over the hilly Birkdale circuit. In spite of poor road surfaces some good times were made. First place went to Leon Elia, the oldest of the three brothers, off the 4.13 mark. lie overhauled liiroll Collins (0.15) in the last stages, crossing the line 15$ seconds before ICrroll. This is Leon's first win since he commenced racing last season, and is a .hist reward for his consistency. His time for the course was 45.25. Collins clocking 50.43 J. Third place and fastest time went to Lave Patten (1.0), who rode well away from the scratch men. and returned the excellent lime of 4(1.4.5, which is 07 seconds under tile old course record. Lave is a solid pedaller, beins second in the Centre race round tlie harbour last season, and also second fastest in the club championship. j The scratch men. Jack Culpan anil Andy. Elia. made a much better exhibition Hinnj in the first race, though the\ were uiial''e to -;ot np to the placing-s However, with Patten on the same mark, there should liemany fast times mad? in coming events. Members will be sorry to learn of the (leatli of Mr. A. Evans, father of the popular riding secretary, Bert Evans. The club extends its deepest sympathy to the lateMr. Evans' family. I

NORTHERN CLUB. The Northern Amateur Cycle Club had a successful day last Saturday, when large fields lined up for both the junior 5* miles and the senior 193 miles race on the clubs, circuit at Tc I'npapa. The iunior race caused a bit of diversion when four-fifths of the field took the wrong turn and passed the starting post going ill the wrong direction. However, it was called no race, and the race proper was held after the finish of the senior contest. The placed juniors were: —P.. Woolly, 1.. Thomas. G. Webb, and A. Jeffries, of whom all tint Webb were riding for the first time. Woollv impressed as a lad who will develop | into a tine; cyclist. lie should remember: to keej) the pace on right to the finish, as he lost considerable timo over the last quarter-mile which might have gained him fastest time. Graham 'Webb in his second race started from scratch alone, and acquitted himself well, lie will do better with a co-marker. Of the others. Thomas should (lo better with a few longer rides, while Jeffries showed promise. The senior race gave the spectators an interesting afternoon, as the large field passing at frequent intervals caused quite a lot of comment. Lan Rollinson in his first ride as a senior made the most of his handicap, and by setting a steady pace neld his own throughout to win comfortably from Harry Webster, who outsprinted Alan ISircliall. It was pleasing to see Webster riding again after a season's rest, for he was once one of the hardest riders in the club. After his exhibition last week, when he gradually wore down his co-markers to leave them and gather in all the field hut one, he should soon be oil u back mark. Birchall rode well, but tired over the last three laps. -Matthews, the fourth man home, rode hard and deserved his place, but lie would probably do better if lie joined in with th 6 boys and went on the club runs, for these are great building-up runs. There was a great sprint for lifth place, there being seven riders in tli» hunt, but Jack I'rice prevailed from Sid Windsor hv a short wheel, with the rest of the field close np. I'rice was only 9 seconds. out for fastest time, having lapped it out well with Windsor, their lap times showing only a variation of 9 seconds over fastest tind slowest laps. \ern Gray finished soon after to claim time honours and thereby establish a club record for the distance. lie also lowered the existing lap record during his first lap to 0.47, as against 7.3. Ilia average speed was 22 1-3 m.p.h. If he keeps on improving he should make a good comarker for Jlerv. Gamble on the scratch mark. Next week's races will be restricted gear races of 11 miles and 10J miles for juniors and seniors. All riders must ride gears below 70 inches. A gear of 70.1 oi over will not do. For the benefit of new riiV.s the following table is given :—Chain wheel, number of teeth 42, sprocket, number of teeth 17—gear (19.2; 44, 18—68.4 • 40 19— 67.S ; -IS, 20—07.2 ; 00, 20—70.
