AUCKLAND CONTROL BOARD. MOTION OF CONDOLENCE. 1 NON-REPLACEMENTS AFTER MAY 23 Opening the meeting of the Control Board of the Auckland Rugby League last; evening, the chairman, Mr. G. Grey Campbell, referred to the sudden death at Carlaw Park, on Saturday, of Mr. Albert A. Cowan, organiser of the Manukau senior team, and a motion of condolence to Mis. Cowan and family was carried in the usual manner. The principle fixture on Saturday wili be between the unbeaten teams, Marist Old Boys and Devonport, preceded by the Richmond-Mount Albert match. Newton Rangers and City Rovers will play the curtain-raiser on No. 2 ground to the game between Manukau and Ponsonby. Nominated by six of the eight senior , clubs, the appointment of Mr. H. Avery as sole selector for this season was confirmed. Council Instruction. A letter from the New Zealand Council stated, in regard to the enforcement of rule 1 of the " Laws of the Game " governing team complement, intimated that it was unnecessary for the council of management to confirm the decision of the annual meeting. Mr. Campbell said he still maintained that the resolutions of the annual meeting were only recommendations, and did not bind the council. However, the council had now officially acted. Mr. J. Pulcutai said he agreed that nonreplacement would be all right 111 representative fixtures, but he considered that the rule should not be applied to club matches. His view was that it was not in the best interests of the game to enforce the non-replacement rule strictly at present. . . The chairman said it appeared that the council's instruction gave the league 110 option. Mr. J. W. Probert, in supporting Mr. Rukutai, said the present rule allowing replacements up to half-time seemed to be working well, and he considered a change undesirable. Mr- R- Doble said the council was not unanimous, but as the law was explicit and a British team was shortly due, the authorities felt that a proper trial of the rule might assist to improve the standard of fitness. Mr. Rukutai said it had never 'been enforced, an<l with the good football now provided his opinion was that the enforcement of the rule might spoil matters and be a handicap. Mr. Doble instanced the form shown against Australia last year as indicating that the application of the rule might do considerable good and compel increased fitness by players and teams. If the rule was found unworkable the league could seek dispensation. The chairman said it would be untair to spring the rules on the clubs 011 Saturday, and it was eventually decided to enforce Rule I. on Saturday week, May 23, and to advise the Referees' Association accordingly. . , . . J. Laird attended to thank the ooard for its recent benefit to him on account ot his injurv last season. He also thanked the ladies' committee of the league for its kindness to him while in hospital. Mr. Campbell said that Laird would 'be the subject of a little function in the Marist dressing room before the team filed out to play on Saturday. _ „ The recommendation of the junior in f in " agement committee was adopted that the transfer fee in respect of J. Ginders from Green Lane to Newton Rangers could not •be claimed by the former club under the rule, which was intended to refer to junior P Transfers.—S. Watene, City to Manukau- G.
