AT THE MARTS.
VEGETABLE PRICES HIGH. An extraordinarily keen demand for first quality vegetables was experienced to-day at the city markets, and prices were accordingly very high. Peas sold at as much as £1 per 301b box, beans 17/9 per 261b box, cauliflower 13/9 per small sack and cabbage 10/0 pel- sack. Lower grades were correspondingly cheaper. Poultry. At to-day's auctions the supply of poultry was heavy and the demand was vcrv fair. The prices paid remain unaltered. The demand for laying birds was poor. Selling rates were as follow:— Cockerels:—Heavy breeds, prime, 2/9 to 4/6 each; not prime, 1/6 up; light breeds, prime, 1/9 to 2/; not prime, 1/3 up. Fat roosters, heavy breeds, prime, 2/ to 3/; light breeds. 1/6 to 2/. Fat hens: Heavy breeds, 1/9 to 2/6; light breeds. 1/3 to 1/9. Pullets: Heavy breeds, best, 2/6 to 4/6; smaller, 1/6 up; light breeds, best, 2/6 to 4/6; smaller, 1/6 up. Drakes: Young, prime, 1/9 to 2/9; smaller, 1/6 up; old. I/O to 2/3. Ducks: Young, 2/6 to 3/6; old, l/'G to 2/3.
