A NEW HOSPITAL.

The Hospital Board has been persuaded by the North Shore local bodies that a hospital should be established on the northern side of the harbour, and has now definitely committed itself to an action on which it had been wavering for some time. Although the request to the Board was not unanimous—Devonport dissenting , —it carried sufficient weight to assure fairly general support for the proposed hospital. Location of course, an important factor, and in this the Board has " been, governed, perhaps unavoidably, by its possession of an area of 80 acres at Northcote rather than by the distribution of the population. This may be a handicap at the outset, as the most populous boroughs are Devonport and Takapuna, but distance is a diminishing factor under modern transport conditions. More important is the type and size of the institution. It is suggested that only minor cases will bo admitted, but in practice the Board will doubtless make use of the whole of the accommodation, particularly if it is hard pressed for room at its main hospital. Finance was indeed the uppermost consideration in the minds of several members in tho discussion yesterday, and it may, be taken for gx'anted that whatever the size of the new hospital it will be put to full use all the time.
