STABLE AND TRACK NOTES

A. TINKER AT TAKANINI. Tho well-known trainer-rider A. Tinker arrived at Takanini yesterday with Spearcourt and the Backward — Humarada yearling. Tinker is still on crutches as a result of a broken leg, sustained some weeks ago, but he expects to be practically recovered within a couple of weeks. QUITE RECOVERED. The Cynic—Kidnapper gelding Cynical Kid, who developed lameness at an interesting part of his and has since been accorded treatment at his owner's place, is reported to have quite recovered and is working soundly again. He has had two outings in the hunting field this season and has been entered for the Great Northern Steeples. W. CATHRO INCREASES TEAM. Ballymoney who throughout his career was trained by J. Cruse, who during recent months raced the Diacquenod gelding in his own interests, is now an inmate of W. Cathro's stable, the lease having ended, and he will again race in the interests of his owner. Ballymoney is to be given a c* .de of schooling. Cathro has also acquired on behalf of a client Maori Song, a rising three-year-old by Hunting Song—Maungakino, the newcomer having arrived last week-end.

RISING TIDE LOOKS THE PART. . Rising Tide, the two-year-old full-brother to Flood Tide, made his first appearance on the tracks this week, having recently been brought from Hastings by It. Miller. Rising Tide, who will sport the same colours as his elder brother, is a chestnut in colour and created a very favourable impression when seen. He is a different type and is more sturdily built than Flood Tide, while he certainly takes the eye as one likely to add further distinction for his French-bred sire, Tidal. SLIGHTLY INJURED. S. J. Reid, who recently returned to his old profession of training at Trentham, has had the misfortune to lose the services temporarily of the Iliad—Countersign yearling filly, who slightly injured herself in the paddock. She was being prepared for Mr. A. C. Feast, of Carterton, who bought her for 60gs at the January sales. Reid's other two youngsters, the Siegfried —Speechless filly (half-sister to Ralphyllis) and the Lackham—Cleaeanta colt (brother to Clessamor), are both progressing well in their early education. BECOMING POPULAR TRACK. Takanini is fast becoming a popular track, and recent arrivals there include D. G. Burgess and A. Tinker. At present there are no fewer than sixteen trainers, the list comprising P. E. Pope, J. W. Cathro, R. Miller, W. H. Patterson, F. Smith, A. Tinker, D. J. Burgess, C. Morse, J. Cruse, W. S. Jarvis, H. Morris, B. Norris, R. Veraey, W. Clifton, F. Walker and H. G. Pinn, the last two mentioned being trotting trainers. There should be a record number of horses in training at this centre next season. TAKANINI JUMPERS. In past seasons Takanini has not been represented to any great extent by hurdlers, but this season a good percentage of leppere are undergoing preparations for coming winter events. High Quality, Chief Lap and Tornado are novices, which class is likely to be added to by the inclusion of Ballymoney and Lord Willonyx. The older brigade of experienced ones comprises Emancipation, Thespis, The Hiker, Huekie and Benighted. During the coming months the district should produce its share of winners in the hurdle events.

FAULTY JUDGMENT. A year' ago at the Randwick sales the yearling colt by Rampion from Armada was puchased by the Itandwick trainer E. D. Lawson for a client who, on seeing him, decided the colt was too small and asked Lawson to persuade the breeder to take him back. This Mr. H. A. Taylor agreed to do and decided to race the colt himself, with Lawson as trainer. He was named Tonga, and he has developed into a good class performer, as he has won four races, including the Champagne Stakes, at the Australian Jockey Club's recent meeting. A similar incident occurred in Sydney some years ago, when an agent for a New Zealander repented his bargain for the same reason after buying the colt that raced as Windbag, a high-class racehorse and a successful sire..
