LAST GOVERNMENT BLAMED.
(By Telegraph. —Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, Thursday. Blaming the inadequate payments made to the unemployed by the la. t Government for the Auckland riots, M . E P. Meachen (Government, > oneakinc in the second reading debat . e of the Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration Amendment Bill in the House of Representatives to-day, said that the disgraceful scenes that were witnessed were the result of a revolt of the unemployed. He was of opinion that unionism would help to control those individuals in the future, and so the bill in that respect was serving a good purpose. Mr. Meachen said that as a result of the riots the unemployed were granted increased payments, nut their unfortunate brothers in the country districts were not given the same rate of pay. He found that the people of Marlborough had contributed £<000 to the lest Government, which went to pay for premiums to insure plateglass windows in Auckland, Wellington and other , places.
