MAIN SOUTH ROAD.

DEVIATIONS PLANNED IMPROVEMENT SCHEME. P APAKUSA- CITY SECTION. Provision is being made by the Main Highways Board for the . ultimate improvement of the Great South Road between Auckland and Papakura, at a cost of several thousands of pounds. This section of the road was one of the first highways in the Auckland Province to be laid down in concrete, and it follows the okl alignment. It thus preserves many of the features of former road-buikling methods, and possesses far too many bends for the liking of motorists. At Easter, when complaints were made concerning reckless driving on the Great South Road, it was asserted that the dangerous practice of passing on bends was particularly noticeable on the stretch between the city and Papakura.

It was reported to-day that the Main Highways Board is well aware of the need for giving attention when practicable to this particular portion of the road, and some time ago, in fact, had decided to take the necessary land for straightening it and eliminating certain of the bends. Several deviations are contemplated, and the principal ones will be near Wiri and adjacent to the northern approach to Papakura. No decision, it is stated, has been reached by the board as to when tin** work on the road will be put in hand, and it has merely taken steps to acquire land for its improvement before it is built upon.
