SILVER FERN CLASS.

The class of 12ft one-design round-bilge boats, designed by Mr. Arch: Logan for the Heme Bay Sailing Club, has proved to be a good type of small sailing boat. are modern in rig and build, sail very well, especially in a fresh breeze, and are quite easy to handle, with their small jib and Bermudan-type mainsail.

Already seven boats have been built and Mr. L. Coulthard has just finished one. There Is a steady demand for the plans, which can be obtained free of cost from Mr. Dennes. A set of moulds can also be obtained, for which a nominal charge to cover the cost of the materials is made. The cost of the boats, complete with sails, spars, centre-board, etc., Is about £30, provided the actual work of building is done by the owner. This is simplified with the aid of the plans and moulds, and any person from 16 to 60 who is handy with carpenters' tools, has a shed where the moulds can be properly set up, the requisite cash, and last, but not least, plenty of patience, can be assured of a really good little ship that will give years of pleasure and be a stepping stone to larger craft. The Anniversary Regatta Committee placed a race for the class on its programme this year. The Tamaki, Devonport and Richmond Clubs and the Xorthcote regatta committee also cater for the class. During the Christmas holidays four of the boats cruised together for ten days around the nearer islands of the gulf, the crews sleeping aboard.

Mr. Los. Jones, a Dtmedin yachtsman who saw the boats racing at the Richmond Club's regatta was so taken with them that he secured a set of plans before he left, and a set has gone to Greymouth and work started on the boat.
