ELLERSLIE NOTES.
SOME SMART EFFORTS. LORDLY KNIGHT AND EPRIS. Trainers had the use of No. 3 grass track at Ellerslie this morning, and a number of horses with engagements at the Avondale meeting were worked over sprint distances, and some smart efforts were recorded. The going was good, and among those to impress were Lordly Knight, Epris and Rereatu. Ned Cuttle was given useful work, which he finished by running the last three furlongs in 40s. Solas was not doing his best while traversing half a mile in 54 3-ss. Fleetwind worked with plenty of dash over three furlongs, whicli she completed in 37 l-ss. This filly has done well during the last month. Rereatu completed five furlongs in 1.2 2-5. It was a smart effort, and he did his work well, although he carried a light weight. Epris was also responsible for a good gallop in traversing half a mile in 49 3-ss. He appeared to work better than he has previously done. Golden Blonde jumped away a second in front of Marjory Daw at the four-furlong post, and maintained her advantage to the finish, running the distance in 50s, Marjory Daw registering similar time. King Mestor, with Vera Acre to assist him down the straight, completed a round in 1.44 2-5. He ran the last seven in 1.34 1-5, and the final half-mile in 52 3-ss. It was a good workout. E. S. Groat has the King Lu gelding in great heart. Lordly Knight ran the best three furlongs of the morning, being timed to complete the distance in 36 3-ss. He was decidedly sore after he cooled off. which his owner stated was due to a knock lie received at Ellerslie on Monday. Pakanui was allotted a useful task over a round, taking 42 2-5s for his last three furlonfs. Scotland, after running his first furlong in 12 4-ss, reeled off half a mile in 50 l-ss. This was a good effort. Te Hai strode over a round, which he completed by running his last three furlongs in 38s. He is engaged on the second day at Avondale. After running her first three furlongs in 40s Gay Papa got to the end of six furlongs in 1.19 4-5. Golden Snahi sprinted two furlongs from the six to the nair-miie post in 25 2-ss.
Owing to C. G. Goulsbro bavins to attend the Hawke's Bay meeting at Hastings to-morrow, H. Goldfinch will replace him on Knight of Australia in the Foley Memorial at Avondale. Goulsbro was also engaged to ride Pakanui, but 60 Tar a fresh rider lias not been obtained, although it is likely that W. J. Broughton will have the mount.
