PAPAKURA TOWN BOARD

The fortnightly meeting of the Papakura Town Board was held last evening Mr. H. E. McEntee was in the chair.

Art Union Profits.—A cheque for £8 was received from the Minister ot Interna] Affairs, being part profits of "Lucky New Year" art union. It was resolved to hand the cheque to the local Welfare League.

..New Subdivision.—A subdivision plan for new shop sites on Great South Road, submitted by the Church of England authorities, was approved on usual conditions.

Health Report.—A report -was received from the local sanitary inspector. Thjs showed there were no infectious diseases reported for the current month.

New Zealand Employers' Federation. — Opinion was divided on the advisability of attending a meeting of the Employers' Federation to discuss the proposed Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration Amendment Bill. It was resolved to leave the question in the hands of the chairman.

Flood Lights for Park.—The cost of installing flood lights for Prince Edward Park for the Rugby League Football Club wa6 estimated to be £'28. It was resolved to inform the club and see if they are prepared to pay a rent in proportion.

Accounts. —Accounts to the value of £ 144:2 were passed for payment.

Balance-sheet.—The annual balancesheet was presented by the clerk. General fund receipts were £7874. and expenditure £6800. The various accounts showed a credit balance with the exception of Prince Edward Park. The credit balance at the bank stood at £3247 19/7.

Cartage.—A committee, consisting of Messrs. Kerr, McDonald and Richardson, was appointed to consider the question of obtaining a motor truck for general purposes.

Leave of Absence. —The chairman, Mr. H. E. McEntee, was granted six weeks' leave owing to urgent business. Mr. D. Weir was appointed acting-chairman.

McGregor Fund.—A letter was received from the Mayor of Auckland, asking the board to take active steps for the McGregor National Memorial Fund. Mr. H. E. McEntee said that while they all appreciated the great work done by the late Squadron-Leader M. McGregor, it was hardly a matter for a donation from the boards funds. Perhaps the returned soldiers would take the question up. Mr. D. Weir added that it was not a question for their personal sympathy, but he agreed with the chairman that the returned soldiers should undertake the question of actively l-aising donations for the fund. This course was decided upon.

ONEHUNGA BOROUGH COUNCIL.

A meeting of the Onehunga Borough Council was held last night, the Mayor, Mr. J. Park, presiding. Crown Eates.—A cheque for £360 has been received by the council from the Treasury from the special Government grant of £8000 for Crown rates. Waikaraka Cemetery.—The draft bill authorising the council to include further reclamations in Waikaraka Cemetery and the amendments necessary to confine the proceeds of the scheme of the development and maintenance of the reserves were referred to the Mayor and Mr. A. A. Coates, with power to act. Mount Smart Domain.—Legislation is to be sought by the council for the future management of Mount Smart Domain. The Mayor is to proceed to Wellington to facilitate the passage of the legislation for both the cemetery and domain.

Royal Oak Traffic.—A tally of the traffic passing the Seddon Memorial at Royal Oak, where six roads meet, by the traffic inspector, was reported to the council as follows:—On Thursday last 1118 vehicles, on Friday 1188. Owing to the great amount of traffic between the hours of 4 and 6 p.m., the inspector is to be stationed there daily, except on Saturdays and Sundays, and also to prosecute for any breaches of traffic by-laws in the borough.

Tenders. —Tne following tenders were accepted:—For lot 25a, Neilson Street, E. Lichtenstoin and Company, Limited, £18 per annum for 21 years; Mays Road Reserve, Messrs. McCartcn Brothers, £7 10/ per annum for three years; Mount Smart Domain grazing rights, C. T. Richards, 10/ per week for three years; installation of electric water heating system at the Block House in Jellicoe Park, the Auckland Electric Power Board, £18 16/11; for preparing plans of Waikaraka and Hillsboro' Cemeteries, T. T. Andrews, £32.

Cycle Road Races.—Permission was given to the Northern Amateur Cycle Club to hold cycle road races on Mount Smart, Rockfield, Nikau and Athens Roads and Oranga Avenue for one season, subject to permission being withdrawn at any time.

No More Subsidy.—The council has been advised by the Labour Department that as from Monday last it will not pay anymore subsidy On the wages of the turncock's and motor mechanic's assistants.

Final Payment.—The breakwater wall has been completed satisfactorily and the balance of the subsidy. £140, lias been paid by the Auckland Harbour Board.

Pumping Engineer.—The council received 60 applications for the position of pumping engineer at a salary of £300 per annum. They were referred to the council in committee.
