Mr. J. B. Donald left for Wellington by last night's Limited express. Mr. H. Turner was a passenger for the South last night by the Limited express. ! The Hon. C. J. Levien, S.M., lias returned from a holiday at the Bay of Islands, and is now at Hotel Cargen. He resumed his duties to-day. Mr. John Alexander, of Auckland, a former engineer in the service of the Union Steam Ship Company, will leave New Zealand on Friday on a trip to Scotland. Mr. and Mrs. F. A. Hadley, of Perth, Australia, are spending a few days in Auckland before leaving for England on Friday. They are guests at Hotel Glenalvon. Mr. R. J. Gard, chief draughtsman in the workshops and maintenance branch of the Railway Department, was a passenger for Wellington by the afternoon, express yesterday. Mr. W. H. Phelps, of Caracas, Venezuela, has returned to Auckland after a fishing trip*to Russell. He is accompanied by Mrs. Phelps, and is staying at the Grand Hotel. Major and Mrs. W. Powlett, of England, returned to Auckland yesterday from Rotorua, and are at Hotel Cargen. They have been on an extended tour of the Dominion. Mr. L. V. Moses, of Messrs. Holman, Moses and Watkin, architects, has been appointed a director of Messrs. J. R. McKenzie, Ltd., and leaves on Saturday for Wellington, where he will reside in future. Mr. G. W. Massingliam, of Wellington, has been appointed private secretary to the Leader of the Opposition, the Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes. Mr. Massingliam has previously held the position of secretary to the Associated Chambers of Commerce. Mr. C. Cowan, president of the Auckland Master Bakers' Association, accompanied Mr. R. H. Montgomery and Mr. G. K. Mathieson, members of ' the association, left by train last evening for Wellington, where they will attend a conference of those interested in the baking trade. Captain A. H. W. Burgess, master of the motor vessel Baroona, who was in charge of the Melanesian Mission steamer Southern Cross for many years, left Auckland yesterday by the Niagara on his way to Scotland, where he will take command of a vessel now being built for the New Zealand coastal trade. Dr. Charles North, of Dunediii, president of the New Zealand Baptist Union and Missionary Society, will leave shortly with Mrs. North for England. They will visit the New Zealand Baptist Missionary Society's stations in East Bengal, at Bralnnanbaria and Chandpur, where, in 1898 Dr. North established I medical mission work. Professor D. B. Copland, professor of commerce and Dean of the Faculty of Commerce at the University of Melbourne, and a former professor of economics at Canterbury University College, has been appointed by the executive committee of the Senate to represent the University of New Zealand at the tercentenary celebrations of Harvard University next September. Mr. J. I. Cato is retiring this week from the position of manager of the Napier branch of the New Zealand Shipping Company. Mr. Cato, who has been 51 years in the service of the company, with the exception of three years when he was stationed at Auckland, lias spent the entire period at Napier. He will be succeeded by Mr. H. V. Bell, formerly manager for the company in Gisborne.
