FINE ARTS BLOCK.
The negotiations precedent to the launching of the scheme for the establishment of a fine arts block in Auckland have extended over seven years, a period which should be amply sufficient. Tlvj new Minister of Education, the Hon. P. Fraser, with whom the question of a site for the block was discussed yesterday, is obviously willing to do what he can to help, but the suggestion is implicit in his remarks that the local bodies concerned should first resolve their own differences. This was the advice given by a former Minister. The Mayor, Mr. Davis, and the City Council were complimented by Mr. Fraser yesterday on the "fine spirit" shown by them in their desire to further the project, and there now appears some hope that the preliminary obstacle to a scheme of great importance will be removed. The project is a large one —the largest since the War Memorial Museum—and not only unanimity of local bodies but strong public support will be essential to its success. Public imagination might be stimulated if the fine arts block were adopted as Auckland's centenary memorial.
