PENNANT BOWLS.

FOURTH ROUND PLAYED. SOME DRASTIC CHANGES. ROTORUA TOURNEY NEXT WEEK. (By TRtJNDLER.) Glorious weather for bowling was experienced on Saturday, but the popular counter-attraction at Ellerslie interfered with the attendance to a considerable extent, increasing the difficulty of the selectors in finding substitutes for the absentees. This was particularly awkward where selected players stayed away without giving early notice, even though their names had been published 011 Thursday, and on some greens it was well after two o'clock before the pennant matches were started, all through players failing to notify their intention of not filling their appointment. The results of the fourth round confirm the earlier impression that the section winners will be West End and Ponsonby, thereby assuring a splendid final between two well-matched clubs, with a good sprinkling of Dominion champions 111 each. There seems to be no question about the position of West End with a lead of V2Vs per cent over Carlton and the rest too far away to be dangerous, for West End ought to get as big a percentage of wins from Otuhuhu and Mount Eden as Carlton can set from Epsom, Pukekohe and New Lynn. A startling change, however, has come over section B, for two wins to Buckland's Beach and three to Helensville have lifted both of these small clubs to 62.5 per cent, which is well within striking distance of Pon-. eon by. They only have to repeat Saturday's performance a month later and Buckland's Beach will be on 70 per cent, which will probably win the section, for Ponsonby will need to get thirteen wins out of sixteen to boat it, while the latter club will need to get at least nine wins to beat Helensville. This shows how evenly the clubs are running, the bottom club in the section having well over half the percentage of the. top one, a very satisfactory position when it is recalled that the clubs virtually do their own handicapping by nominating the number' of rinks they 'would like to play. The centre executive. nc ,T er alters the numbers except when, necessary to make the six groups in- each section of equal size, and then only to the extent of two rinks up or do#n. The even position in, section B is not unprecedented, for at this stage last season the relative positions in section A were almost identical with this, but it seems rather ironical that on that occasion Carlton was a fairly comfortable first, whereas West End was at the very bottom, carrying a quota that was evidently from the first jump far beyond the capacity of its limited membership. However, most features regarding the progress this season will be gathered from the table hereunder, showing the number of rinks fielded by each club, 'the wins and losses last Saturday and the percentage of wins in the four rounds combined, while readers can see by the remaining columns how each club has gone up or down, for they show the percentage at the end of each round inclusive, omitting decimals: — SECTION A. Already the bowlers in a body

have paid a tribute to hie memory, carrying out on Saturday afternoon with due solemnity the thoughtful suggestion of the president of the centre, Mr. A. E. Written, that before the pennant matches started the players assembled on every green should observe a short period of silence. On Wednesday the bowlers of Auckland city and province will; celebrate in the usual fashion the ninety-sixth anniversary of the official proclamation of this country as a British possession and there will be about a dozen tournaments in the city and suburbs. On Saturday there will be the annual trek to Rotorua, to start on Monday the big Hot Lakes tournament, for which the usual 55 rinks have entered, and a fortnight-later the annual pairs tournament will commence. It is wonderful how easily the Rotorua tournaments are filled up, but this can be readily understood by those who have once played there, for there is no other place in the world where 200 men can play bowls in sight of each other and in sight of; natural jets_ of steam, while only a few. yards away is boiling .mud wjiicn has apparently been in the same state for centuries. The rink entries show the usual preponderance of Auckland players, but there is again a fair proportion of visitors from Poverty Bay. Hawke's Bay, Taranaki, Wanganui and Wellington. It seems unfortunate, therefore, that it has not been considered feasible to hold' the additional tournament which was instituted in. 1919 a little earlier each alternate year, so that when the Dominion tournament is held in Auckland or Wellington some of the South Island competitors thereat might be encouraged 'to stay an extra week for Rotorua, for I < cannot recall a single instance when a rink has been prepared to spend * in the North Island the two or three weeks which always intervene between the Dominion tournament and the Rotorua.
