TWENTY RESCUED.
LIFE-SAVERS' HARD DAY. TWO NEW PLYMOUTH BEACHES. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) NEW PLYMOUTH, this day. Nearly 20 people were rescued from the surf at Fitzroy and Strandon beaches yesterday. Excellent work was performed by beach patrols, who gave a remarkable demonstration of the value of organised life-saving. The exceptional heat of the past few days sent thousands of people to the beaches. Under the influence of a fairly strong breeze to-day a considerable swell developed at the unsheltered beaches and at Strandon and Fitzroy a number of bathers got into difficulties in a rip which in such conditions exists there. None of those rescued was in a serious condition, but only the prompt and efficient action of members of the lifesaving clubs prevented tragedy.
