PORT BEACONS.
_ SAFETY AT WHAKATANE. j (From Our Own Correspondent.) WHAKATANE, Sunday. In view of the approaching development of the Whakatane paper mills, it lias been necessary to give some attention to the upper reaches of the harbour and provide for the safe berthing of vessels at the mill wharf. The Northern . Shipping Company asked for ten beacons to be erected and these the board supplied. At its last meeting the board received a letter from the shipping company expressing thanks for prompt attention and stating that ten red beacon lights had been forwarded to mark the passage at night. The company also suggested the removal of 6nags and an old vessel hull, but the chairman said he had inspected the channel and found it to be in satisfactory order with the exception that one beacon was too short. That could • bo remedied.
