AUCKLAND TOURNEY. All Grades Advanced — Miss M. Macfarlane's Struggle. Witli excellent progress made in all grades, the jubilee tourney of tlic Auckland Lawn Tennis Association to-day and all the singles are now entering tlic final stages. The feature of the morning's play was the hard struggle of Miss Marjorie Macfarlane against Miss Margaret Beverley, last'year's junior provincial champion. Playing steady, neat tennis, Miss Beverley was on top from the start, and had won the first set, C —2, with tlircc-love in the second before Miss Macfarlane began to make an impression. Then the lighting qualities of Miss Macfarlanc showed themselves, and her recoveries and , strong driving to the back line had their effect. She took the upper hand with the testing fourth game, and was never again greatly troubled, winning, 2 —6, C—-4, G —3. Miss D. Nicholls, Miss N. Bevcr-1 ley and Miss J. E. Ramsay are the remaining semi-finalists, with easy vic- , torics to their credit. ) In the men's singles the organisers of the tournament were vindicated In thl-ir judgment of seeded players, Roach, Brown, Livingstone, .
