MATCH SOLITAIRE—AN ABSORBING GAME.

The simple little device illustrated here "will while away many a tedious hour for an invalid friend. It is as absorbing as draughts and has the advantage over draughts that it is a solo game. Its cheapness also recommends it; it is made from any odd piece of wood, and its "men" are simply matches.

The object of the-game is to remove as many matches as possible from the board by jumping the men as in draughts, but only one man at a time. The player may move up or down or across the board, but never diagonally. The board having been fully "manned," the gajne is commenced by removing one match from any position the player may fancy. He then commences to jump the matches one at a time. Every time a match is jumped it is removed. The novice will usually be able to reduce his men to six left on the board at the finish, but after much practice they can be reduced to two. The boards mainly used, are pieces of butter box Bin by Bin, but they may be of any size fancied. The diagram explains how' tha board is laid out. Boards look well stained and varnished or enamelled a bright colour, with matches in a contrasting shade.
