THE CRAFT OF STENCILLING.

HOW TO MAKE A PARCHMENT LAMP SHADE,

ARTICLE 111. An interesting branch of stencilling work, which includes the introduction of a little knowledge of leather work, is the making of parchment light shades on a wire frame foundation. The wire frame to fit your light can be bought quite cheaply. Other materials needed beside the stencilling took are the parchment paper and a leather lacing. The first step is the development of the pieces necessary for the covering of the frame. This is done by fitting the frame on to the parch-

nient and marking out the sections. These sections are then cut out with a sharp knife and decorated. This is where the stencilled design is used, and after a little practice you will find it quite an easy job to make up very effective designs of your own. The holes are then punched for the lacing by holding the adjacent sides of the pieces together and punching them simultaneously. The lacing is done as shown in Fig. 1, by passing the laces through each hole and around the frame, thus making the binding firm. This fixes the parchment to the shade, and- all that is now required is to give the frame a thin coat of clear lacquer.
