A PICTURE REVIEW OF THE LIFE OF KING EDWARD VIII.

"Ich Dien"—"l serve"—has been the motto of England's new ruler. King Edward VIII.. aince his investiture at the age of 16 years as Prince of Wales. The well-known three "feathers and the motto "I serve" have long been the badge of the Princes of Wales the Black Prince at the Battle of Crecy first wearing it on his shield to the battlefield. No prince could have so faithfully observed a motto, so loyally carried out the injunction it contained, as did our new King. For many years past he has been equipping himself to face the tremendous task which he knew must some day be his, and to carry on as ably and greatly the traditions laid down by the late King, his father. Although King Edward may not be crowned for some months, actually the moment the breath leaves the body of a sovereign the heir-apparent becomes the reigning monarch. Several days, however, elapse before, with ceremonial pageantry, he is proclaimed King, but almost immediately he must take up the arduous and all-embracmg duties of ruler. It is interesting to note here that the title of Prince of Wale, now lapses, this being bestowed only upon the eldest son of the Sovereign. Our new King has spent a vigorous youth—travelling as ambassador to the Dominions and serving as a soldier during the war being but two incidents in a life of service—and we now look forward to the years in which there is a promise of devoted and whole-hearted work for hit Empire.
