Our Beloved Monarch

"Mourn, for to us he seems the last, M m Remembering all his greatness in the past" SORROWING hearts fill the countries of the British Empire. For days past all eyes have been turned to a little corner of Norfolk, where England's beloved King lay fighting a vain battle for life. King George is dead. A shadow hangs over the British peoples of the world—a shadow which extends from cottage to mansion—from the farthest corners of the realm to lands far across the sea. And hearts are grieved and sorrowful in the passing of a just and noble Monarch who may rule his subjects no longer. Here in this far away corner of the British Empire thousands of people had no opportunity of seeing their King. Others remembered him as a sympathetic and understanding representative of the Royal Family when, in 1901, he toured New Zealand as the Duke of York. But although 13 thousand miles separate New Zealand from the Mother Country—although to many the King was but a name; yet to all did it symbolise truth, service and devotion. The littlest toddler at home could lisp the National Anthem; the youngest child at school knew that his country was ruled by a great and good Monarch. Our dear King, by his wise ruling, his sympathy with his subjects in their time of trouble, his tireless devotion to duty during the dark years of the Great War, and his deep friendship with the British people—in such ways did he endear himself to a Nation and win in greater measure than has ever before been bestowed the love and regard of every British subject the world over.
