Ginger, cloves, cinnamon, and all other spices contain what are termed essential oils, These can be distilled, and are often used medicinally. W hen you eat spice, or drink anything which has been heated with spice, you consume an appreciable quantity of these It is because such oils are powerfully medicinal that they are prescribed in diarrhoea and flatulency. But after they have done their work in the stomach and intestines they pass into the blood, and when they reach the brain they cause excitement. Spices make one" restless and feverish. They are sometimes very useful in the winter when one is chilled and depressed; but in the summer they are, save under very exceptional circumstances, to be carefully avoided.
