Trade Unions Block Seamen's Proposal. CONFERENCE SOUGHT. MELBOURNE, January 23. There is to be no extension of the shipping strike as the result of the Australian Council of Trades Unions' conference, wlii<sh ended to-<lay. So much hostility was displayed by the delegates to the seamen's extension proposal that it was withdrawn. The council is endeavouring to arrange for a conference with the shipowners, also to ask the Government to alter the Transport Workers' Act to enable members of the Seamen's Union to accept employment.
