AUSTRALIA WINS.

FIRST TEST IN AFRICA. Spin Bowler's Triumph at Durban. O'REILLY FIVE FOR 49. United Press Association. —Copyright. (Received 10 a.m.) DURBAN, December 18. Tlie first Test match between South Africa and the touring Australian team terminated to-day in warm and sunny weather, with a | north-easterly wind. The wicket was powdery and damaged. Australia won by nine . wickets. South Africa was 181- behind on the first innings, and with three down for 107 in the second innings,-Rowan (33) and Nourse (48) resumed batting this morning. Grimmett was concentrating on a badly-worn patch on the leg side. Rowan early had a narrow escape from stumping. The field was 30 well placed that runs were checked. However, Rowan and Nourse quickly forged ahead, taking most runs from Fleet-wood-Smith, but Grimmett was treated with respect, bowling four maidens in succession. Two hundred runs came in 197 minutes. Shortly afterward Rowan, when '49, fell a victim to -Grimmett. The batsman jumped out and was beaten by an off-break ball which just removed the bails. Nourse, who was then 72, was exceptionally solid and steady, and had carried his score to !)1 when he was caught by Fingleton off O'Reilly. The latter set a leg-trap after he and Fleetwood-Smitli had bowled unchanged for an hour and a half. Nourse received a great ovation for his lionhearted innings. The score at' the luncheon adjournment was 242 for five wickets, and on restarting the. game O'Reilly immediately struck a deadly spell, getting Wade with his third ball, and Nicholson with his fifth. Grimmett also quickly accounted for Dalton, and'three wickets thus fell for no runs. Crisp began with his customary vigour, and crashed Grimmett over the straight boundary. The tail-enders were soon dismissed, the innings closing after 289 minutes. O'Reilly bowled magnificently, taking five for 28 to-day. Australia was left with 102 runs to get in 180 minutes. Fingleton and Brown opened comfortably, but when the latter was 22 Nicholson missed an easy chance of stumping, him.. The same batsman later was easily caught, with the total at 93, at mid-on. Fingleton registered the winning hit, making this the first occasion that South Africa, under the leadership of H. F. Wade, had lost an international match. V. Y. Richardson, the Australian captain, said: "I have nothing but the greatest of admiration for the great light which South Africa put up. They gave us many anxious moments, and we are very relieved to have come out so well." Wade said: "I offer my heartiest congratulations to the Australians. By scoring so few runs in the first innings we threw away a great opportunity." Wade has been appointed captain for the second Test, commencing at Johannesburg on December 24. Scores:— SOUTH AFRICA.
