COLLAPSE AT WHEEL

CUSTOMS STREET ACCIDENT

That death was due to heart disease was the verdict returned by the coroner, Mr. W. R. McKean, S.M., this afternoon at an inquest held concerning the death of ' David Hutchison, engineer, who was found dead in the front seat of his motor car after it had collided with a tramways section box in Customs Street West just after 7 a.m. on December 9 last.

Frank Dobney gave evidence that when he saw the car opposite the Waverley Hotel it was proceeding at about 15 m.p.h. The driver was lyingright river on his left-hand side. Witness saw that the car was not under control. The car grazed a centre pole and then ran on to strike a section box. On rushing over to the car witness saw the driver had a cut over the eye and was then dead. Constable Solly said lie had examined the car subsequently and found it to be in good order. There was blood on the dashboard and a mark where the deceased's head had apparently struck it.

Dr. W. Gilmour; pathologist at the Auckland Hospital, said the postmortem showed deceased had suffered from heart disease.

The verdict of the coroner was that deceased had collapsed while at the wheel of his motor car and it was due to this that the accident occurred. Death was due to heart disease..
