PAPATOETOE CLUB,

! AUCKLAND CENTRE. j CHAMPIONSHIPS IN FEBRUARY j LADY'S RIDE TO WELLINGTON. I : 1 The Auckland Amateur Cycling Centre met last evening, when delegates from the Auckland Ladies', Lynndale, l'apatoetoe, , Northern, Rotorua, Manukau, and TakaI puna Clubs were present. 1 It was decided to have Miss V. E. ; Baiid's proposed record attempt on the I Auckland to Wellington route officially } recognised. Miss Baird signified her intention of starting the attempt from the Auckland Post Office on the morning of either December 30 or 31 at 7 a.m. The actual date will depend on weather conditions. Miss Baird holds the present ladies' record, 79 hours 40 minutes. The Hamilton Amateur Athletic ,and Cycle Club sought permission to conduct live championship events on its programme for January 29. Resolved to ascertain if any of the affiliated cycling clubs in the Waikato had a ny objection to a permit being granted before finalising.the matter. The West Coast (Nofth Island) Centre wrote stating that it intended to conduct the Dominion cycling championship meeting at Wanganui on February 29, 1936. The title events will be the uupaced kilometre, the sprint and the ten miles, and a one mile junior for riders under 18 years. The Waikato Amateur Cycling Club forwarded its rules and constitution, which were approved, provided that a different club colour was decided upon, as the royal blue specified was similar to that of two of. the present clubs. Registrations from clubs:—Papatoetoe 44, Manukau 24, Northern 7, Waikato 7. Ladies' 3, Beach Haven 1, Rotorua 20, and Hamilton 2. < The secretary was instructed to acquaint clubs with the fact that registrations commence from January 1 for the 103' C -season, and that all riders wishing to race at the New Year's Day meeting at Whatawhata must wear the new numbers. Permits for open meetings granted:— Manukau, January 27;. Northern, February 3; Papatoetoe, February 11. It was decided to hold the Auckland provincial championship meeting at the Western Springs Stadium banked concrete, track on the evening of February 17. Seven

title events will be'held: One kilometer 'unpaced, two laps 6print, ten miles human paced and one mile paced for seniors, one mile and' one kilometre unpaced for juniors, and a one mile for ladies. Three handicaps will also be conducted.

On the referee's motion it was decided to have a special inquiry into the three miles B grade event which was decided at Papatoetoe last Saturday, and for this purpose a meeting has been called for January, when all starters will be requested to attend.

The Fapatoetoe Amateur Cycling Club upheld its claim for Auckland track supremacy on -Saturday when its members won the scratch race meeting by a comfortable 50 per cent majority over the next club. A striking feature of the day's racing was in the final of the half mile A grade, the meeting' of the crack Papatoetoe scratch trio — : the Mclnnarney brothers, Eay and Arthur, and Eoy Taylor. The powerful junior Arthur Mclnnarney was the stumbling block of the favourite, Patrick. Arthur's sprint in was fast, yet seemingly effortless and a source of admiration from the "stand." In ■ the final the* result went to Eay, with Taylor second and Arthur third. That consistent rider who keeps in the first rank year after year, Sid Pinfold, was also three times placed in the ace section. Some provincial titles should come to Papatoetoe this year. In the B grade the club again got its share of the pickings with six points. Ken Mclnnarney took a heat in the half, mile and ran third'in the final. Gordon Eobinson also won a heat and pipped Ken for second in the final. C. W. ("Bubs") Allan ran second to the Manukau rider Phil Morris in both heat and final of the mile and Sel Webster was third in the three-miler. Des Knight, of the C grade, was the only match for a heady Lyhndale team. Twice he cut through the opposition, with a third in the three-mile and second in the half-miler. His showing against experienced track men was very sound. The D grade was a triumph for Papatoetoe juniors. Out of ! .a possible/Zl points they took 20. Of that 20, 10 cairte from the whirring wheels of Charlie Picknell and eight from Jim Middleton. The two met five times in all and gave some fine finishes. Three times the verdict went to Jim and twice to Charlie, and in each case the one was runner-up to the other. A third 15-year-old lad, Ira White, came with; a great rattle to get third in the mile final, while -that steady pedaller Bill McGhie was -third in the half. Bill trains in the super company of the Mclnnarneys and more; will be heard.of him. •.•••»' , . Charlie Cochrane. is one of the most liked &nd respected members of the club. It is little r 'over ,six months "firice" he joined up,, yet in. .that, .time, his.. frank, open nature has .endeared him to all with whom'he has >■ come in contact, 'cyclists and the cycling public alike. At _ the beginning of the track" season' lie Had little track experience. Unlike sonje, he realised a little knowledge'is a dangerous thing, and set out to find out all he could, so he is now well versed in track lore. He is extremely careful, never . making wild dashes arid endangering others; his knowledge of cycling, combined with his natural ability and cqol-headedriess and a very- quick cycling head, make him the very safest of men to ride with. The other open meeting of the week, at Otahuhu last Thursday, was- also a good one for Papatoetoe riders. Jim Middleton pulled off a fine double, with othet club men, filling the majority of the placings. . ' • Fred Glendinning will be visiting the Botorua Club at Christmas and takes with him the best wishes' of his clubmates. .. • - .
