£4675 GRANTED.

ART UNION PROFITS. V MANY BODIES BENEFIT. MINISTER'S STATEMENT. In announcing the allocation of £4075 from art union No. 45 for distribution among various organisations, Hon. W. E. Parry, Minister of' Internal Affairs, who arrived from. Wellington this morning, said ho wished to emphasise that his aim had been to see that the available profits of the art union were given to bodies dispensing relief to the less fortunate section of the community. The money would be distributed among those people who would not benefit either from the special Christmas bonus to the unemployed, or from the special grant to hospital boards. Thirty-three bodies throughout New Zealand will benefit. ' Hard Pressed. "The organisations to which grants are being made have, under existing conditions, been hard pressed to find the wherewithal to continue their benevolent work," continued Mr. Parry. "I hope that the grants decided upon will be the means of brightening the Christ- i mas season for many who would not I otherwise be provided for, and every | effort will be made to ensure that only they and not others helped from the other sources§ mentioned will benefit from this distribution." If it might appear that South Island organisations are not participating in the allocation proportionately to the j North Island, the sole reason, stated the Minister, was that within the class of bodies it was desired to assist there were comparatively few applications from South Island organisations for grants from art union funds. There had been no time available since the profits of art union 45 had been disclosed to institute anything in the nature of an inquiry as to organisations in the South Island which had not but whose efforts deserved special recognition. The distribution had been expedited in order that the grants made may be expended for Christmas. Money Distributed.
