COMPLIMENT TO A. PARSONS. m

•!?:» Tfiff fipacloiis pavilioii of : $e Potisonhy | j<Bowling Club, will need _ to 'be again »' if ' tiie members intend to have * many more socials, like they tendered to 11 Mr. Arthur Parsons on Monday, for the '.< purpoee \tof 'congratulating him. on . his , spectaoular win in the opeii singled championship of the Auckland Centre. Very few members were absent, while friends - ,and admirers of the club and their ehain- . pion attended from far and near, ih- • eluding' Mr".. F. A. Hosking, who specially V* came all'" the way from Pukekohe for the function, Mr. R. S. Higginbotham. (Henp idereon), Mr. Parsons' most distinguished i protege, who profited so much by the ■ , tuition received from the veteran cham- < pion as to win the champion of champions of the centre, and former members of . the club, like Mr. W. J. Campbell, who still showed their friendly interest in their old comrade.

Naturally there was great enthusiasm, especially when some of the speakers remarked on the possibility that the club would be in the final of the pennant competition, and several commented on the unusual nature of the singles championship, in that it was won twice in succession by Mr. Parsons, more than two decades after he had already won it two years in succession- The-jfuest of theievening was in reminiscent mood, and drew from this' feature the claim that the «tandard of- play in: Aucklapd. was just as high 'before the war as it is now, incidentally remarking that it had been lis pleasure to win the"'Dominion: rink, championship'in i-the middle of the period' covered by his four wins. It made him wondec -what would happen. .in 1945, to which there came ' the ready response, "Win it again," Mr. Frank Livingstone subsequently suggesting that the champion would still be going Strong in 1955. The toast of the evening was proposed by Mr. A. E. Whitten, president of the centre, who also presented the winning certificate to .the champion, and a duplicate of it to the club. He recalled that when he first arrived in Auckland about 23 years ago the first club he visited was Ponsonby,' and he had no sooner entered the grounds than Mr. Parsons came along and invited him to play, although the latter had probably long ago forgotten the incident.

Mr. Grey Campbell, president of the club, was in the chair, and he proposed the toast of the executive of the Auckland Centre. The vice-president of that body, Mr. W. J. Truscott, responded, and after eulogising the guest of the evening he took thfe opportunity (to inform the gathering that since he had been elected to the executive be had made tlie discovery that he was joined with a body of capable men who were quite fitted to formthe directorate of any public compa^• The toast of the guest wafi supported by Mr. John Veale, the only man in the room who has been playing bowls for 50 yews, and by Mr. Ernie Jury, twice winner of the Dominion rink championship. Mr. I. J. Sutherland added a humorous touch to the proceedings by recalling incidents in his sporting activities, liis reference to Mr. Jack Conway's enthusiasm over- football being specially -topical.
