OPENING DAY AT KAREKARE. "The voluntary service to the public rendered by these young men cannot be praised too highly," said Mr. B. C. Browne, president of the newly-formed surf lifesaving club at Karekare at the club's official opening yesterday. "Week-end after week-end they safeguard the lives of bathers and are, therefore, worthy of every help the public can give them." In endorsing the president's remarks Mr. H. C. Sidford, honorary secretary of the Auckland Surf Life-saving Association, who, with Mr. M. G. Adams, treasurer, officially represented that body, paid tribute to the fine type of young man in the club. The latter was particularly fortunate in having a keen and enthusiastic instructor in Mr. L. Reed. Teams from the club, attired in black costumes, with gold badge and gold-striped caps, gave demonstrations of methods of rescue and release to deal with a drowning person. A sis-man rescue and resuscitation team gave a run-out in the surf, demonstrating the correct method of resuscitation. A novelty item, musical flags, was won by R. Wright. Members of the Piha Club were also present.

A milestone in the history of the lifesaving movement in the Auckland province was marked at the week-end, the occasion be.ing the official opening of the' Milford Surf Club's season at the completion of its tenth year of activity. The work of surf life-savins was pioneered by this old establishtvl club. What was looked upon with more or lef.? tolerant amusement in the early days of the club has grown into a comprehensive system operating throughout the Auckland province, and surf clubs have been responsible for the saving of many lives. The season was officially opened by Dr. T. H. Pettit, president of the Auckland Surf Association, which was represented also by Messrs. Dicker and Elwarth, and the Royal Life-Saving Society was represented by the secretary, Mr. F. Langley. A welcome to all suporters and official?

was extended by the Milford Club president, Mr. J. Gulniven. and an excellent muster of members provided a comprehensive' programme of life-saving events, two full teams being present under the captaincy of Messrs. Marriage and Murtagh. Surf medallions gained at recent examinations were presented to J. Carroll and S. Murtagh, and many keen supporters of the club were entertained to afternoon tea at a happy informal gathering at the conclusion of the day's activities.
