DETECTIVES' RAIDS.

BOOKMAKING ALLEGED. FINES OF £100 AND £30. Raids on city buildings carried out by Detectives Moore and Miller this morning resulted in four men appearing before Mr. Wyvern Wilson, S.M., in the Police Court this afternoon. , Described as a motor driver, Daniel Augustus Lindsay, aged 48, was charged that, being the occupier of premise? in Palmerston Buildings, -17, Queen Street, lie did use the premises as a common gaming house. On the application of Mr. A Wilson, who appeared for accuscd; .L'lids'iv was remanded for a week, bail of £50 being allowed. This morning a search warrant had been executed and betting material had been found. Accused had said that he was only an agent. There was an unlisted telephone -on the premises. Mr. R. E. N. Matthews, who appeared for accused, said Barker had not been in trouble before. "Can't Always Expect Fines." Stanley Thomson, aged 33, a clerk, pleaded guilty to a charge of using premises at 2a, Wright's Buildings, which he occupied, as a common gaming house. Senior Detective Hull suid u plain-clothes constable had no difficulty in placing two bets with Thomson on November 11 and 12. About mid-day to-day Detectives Moore and Miller executed a search warrant on the office and found two telephones, which were used solely for betting purposes. The sum of £7 was seized. Thomson was in business on his own account, and was reputed to be in a fairly large way. Mr. J. Terry, who appeared for defendant, said Thomson had been unemployed and recently he had been persuaded to take up betting again as a means of earning his livelihood. Betting had been of small denomination, and the fact that only £7 was found indicated that his business was not a substantial one. "I see he was lined £50 in January last," said Mr. Wyvern Wilson, S.M. "That does not seem to have checked him. This time you will bo fined £100. I can only warn him that he cannot always-, expect finefe." .
