MEAT BOARD LEVY.

INCREASED- ONE-THIRD. The New Zealand Meat Producers' Board has advised the freezing works that, from January 1, 1936, levies on meat exported will "be increased by onethird over all classes. The new levy rates, with the existing ones in parentheses, are as follows: Mutton and lamb, Id (%d) a carcase; pork, Id (%d) a carcase; beef, %d (%d) a quarter; veal, %d (%d) a side. The rates are now back to the level ruling in 1931. During the past thre: years ended June 30 the board's expenditure has exceeded its revenue, and it has had to draw on its accumulated funds to the extent of about £36,000. Last year the net levies collected were £38,000, and the deficit for the year was £13,000, or roughly one-third. Since 1932 the expenditure on advertising has increased bv £5000, on research grants and experiments by £2000, and on exchange by £ 5000. The board levies on the freezing companies, which pass on the cost to the exporters and so on to the producers.
