LONDON'S BUSES
their fuel consumption.
LONDON, October 5. London's public transportation buses are being transformed from petrol to heavy oil engines, in the new Diesel conversion plan. ' Since the beginning of August the Diesel engine has ceased to have, the advantage over the petrol engine in that its fuel paid only 2 cents per gallon tax instead of 16 cents. Both are now on the same footing, and the vehicle duty is the same for both. The Diesel, however, still has the advantage that while a bus gets only 5 to 5i miles to a gallon of gas, on heavy oil it covers nine miles. As a result, the London Passengers Transport Board's fuel consumption, which is now about 45,000,000 gallons a year, will gradually be reduced to between 25,000,000 and 30,000,000 gallons.
