SUBMARINE MYSTERY.
I Underwater Fleet Operating Off Galapagos. THOUGHT TO BE JAPANESE. (Received 9.30 a.m.) * VANCOUVER, November 3. Dispatches from Galapagos Islands, off the coast of Ecuador, state that a fleet of submarines which were not identified was manoeuvring near San Cristobal Island, the most easterly of the group, 011 Thursday night. The submarines were described as equipped with electric projectors. Off Harrington Island, west of San Cristobal, was a ship of large tonnage, presumably the mother ship of the submarine fleet. Other dispatches, from Balboa, 111 the Canal Zone, state that the submarines were not from the United States. It has been suggested that they might be Japanese. The Government of Ecuador was not able to investigate the affair, because 110 adequate boat was available.
