SILVER CROSS.
AWARD FOR BRAVERY. HAMILTON BOY DECORATED. By announcement of the GovernorGeneral, Lord Galway, a Silver Cross for gallantry witli considerable risk has been awarded to Charles John Cook, aged 14, a pupil of the Hamilton Technical High School. The boy saved Bruce Rennie, aged six, whoso father, Mr. Roy V. Rennie, of Taumarunui, was drowned when a dinghy capsized off Cheltenham Beach on January 31 last. All three were in the dinghy at the time. There is one higher award, the Bronze Cross, which is given in exceptional circumstances for special heroism or extraordinary risk. The Silver Cross award was made by Lord Galway as Dominion Chief Scout. The boy Cook was also presented with the Royal Humane Society of New Zealand's certificate, the Mayor of Hamilton, Mr. J. R. Fow, making the presentations. Friends of the late Mr. Rennie presented the boy Cook with an inscribed gold watch last Anzac Day. The lad has been a member of the Claudelands group of the Boy Scouts' Association for five years, first as a wolf cub and later as a scout. He now holds the rank of a second.
