H.M.S. DIOMEDE.
NEW ZEALAND CREW. UNABLE TO VOTE AT ELECTION. New Zealand ratings on H.M.S. Diomede will not be able to exercise the franchise at the general election if the warship is still absent from New Zealand waters on polling dav. "No provision has been made for the New Zealand members of the crew to exercise their vote," said Mr. F. Evans, Registrar of Electors, this morning. "The Diomede left Auckland' prior to the issue of the writs, these having been issued this morning. Seamen may only vote between the day of the issue of the writs and polling day. Nothing in the law permits of votes by wireless, telegraph or by proxy. Nobody knows where the Diomede is or is likely to be. "Members of the crew could have applied for electors' rights before the warship sailed, but in that case they would have had to vote before a collector of Customs in New Zealand at any time after the issue of the writs." During the Great War special provision was made for the members of the Expeditionary Force to vote when absent from New Zealand, both for members of Parliament and on the licensing issue.
