SHOOTING SENSATION. Dramatic Opening of Nanking Conference. ASSAILANT BADLY INJURED. United Press Association.—Copyright. (Received 0.30 a.m.) NANKING, November 1. A shooting sensation occurred at the opening of the session of the National Kuomintang Conference. While the delegates were being photographed a man, at first saicl to be a Japanese journalist, drew a revolver and fired repeatedly. The. assailant seriously wounded Wang Ching-wei, Chinese Premier and Foreign Minister. lie also wounded Chang-chi, a veteran member of the Kuomintang and Kan Lai-kuan, chief of Marshal Chiang Kai-shek's political training bureau.
The assailant was immediately shot down by Wang's bodyguard. Wang was hit above the cheek and was rushed to hospital. Ho is expected to recover. The assailant was critically injured and taken to the same hospital, which troops and police are guarding. The conference was adjourned indefinitely. It was later ascertained that the assailant was a Chinese correspondent. Two accomplices fired at the police and troops, who arrested them after they had exhausted their ammunition. The Japanese Consul issued a denial- that Japanese were involved.
PREARRANGED PLAN. POSED AS PRESSMAN. (Received 12.30 p.m.) NANKING, November 1. The assailant has been identified as Sun Ming-Hsun, an ex-sergeant of the Cantonese 19th Route Army. A preconceived plan was indicated by the fact that he was not a newspaperman but secured the status of a journalist some weeks ago. Ten arrests were made, including two who surrendered, the assailant and a woman, an ex-Com-munist. Wang is reported to have an even chance of recovery. His assailant also is surviving..
