ATTRACTIVE INKSTAND AND PEN REST.

The illustrations in Fig. 1 and 2 are of an inkstand made from a small rectangular piece of wood and a cotton reel. An unspillable inkwell was let into the base and the whole model lacquered, making an attractive inkstand and pen rest. You may make your base any size you like, big enough if you wish to hold a bottle of red ink and also a bottle of black ink. Plane your base to the required dimensions and chamfer all the way round. Place your inkwell on the base in the position it is to occupy, and with a

sharp knife mark its position on the base. With a gouge or ordinary chisel cut out this shape to a depth of a quarter of an inch. Now cut an ordinary cotton reel into two, lengthways, and before fastening the two pieces on the base, lacquer them a bright colour, or a colour to match your inkwell if it is a coloured xylonite one. Now lacquer the base black, or any desired colour and fix the half cotton reels in position, either by a small nail from underneath the base, or by glueing them on. Make the inkwell fit tightly.
