RACING SEASON.

STARTS NEXT SATURDAY. Racing Will start cnrlior this year than for several seasons. Saturday. November !). two weeks before the usual opening date, was applied for by the Akarana, Richmond and Takapunn Clirlw, and each will carry out races on the day.

The Akarana Club 'is holding a cruising race to Matlatia for centreboard craft 20ft and over, and a race for keel yachts, both ' classes fining direct. In conjunction with the Howick Club, a race for IS-footors will ■he sailed over a harbour course. The 'Richmond Cruising Club will hold a general handicap sweepstake, starting off the Ponsonby wharf at :: p.m., orer the ufiial harbour course. The Takapuna Club will hold a race for their 55 class only. Before the race all crews will be weighed at the clubhouse, where they are requested to assemble at 2.13 .p.m. The Howick Club will hold a race next Saturday, .starting and finishing off the Akarana clubhouse, for IS-footers, for which class the elub is catering exclusively this season, except on April 5, when the regatta will he held, with all events open. The tide next Saturday is full as 5.55 p.m. As an indication of form for the official opening, which takes place on November 10, the performance of all the new boats and the best of the season will be carefully noted, although it is seldom a reliable guide to form.

Amongst the new boats will be Mania Y25. Ron Gurr's semi-square bilge boat, built by Gordon Miller from plans by Jack Brooke, all of Devonport. She is a fine job. and finished like a grand piano. She looks small compared with some of the 1-1-footers. and will he all mast and sail. She will be in good hands, and can be depended on to make a fair show. Another new boat in this class, which will not be ready until early December, Is one designed by Arch. Logan and now being # built by Jack Speight and his crew at Karangahape Road. She will also have the modern tall Bermuda.n rig, her jib only going to the stem head, and a short boom. They are making a cood.job of her and deserve success. No doubt Mr. Logan is keeping an eye on her progress.

A third newcomer to this class is one built by the Curroy Bros., of Parnell. She has the Bermudan rig, with a Sift mast, and is also a good example of the boatbuilder's art, being finished in natural colour and varnished. With the old cracks tuned up. like Jim, Dickson is bavins Surprise attended to, the racing in the Y class gives promise of being extraordinarily keen again.

The V class will be as good as ever. The Atalanta and Arline will be in the best of nick again. Don Blake is havin" alterations made to Memutu, including a new mast and sail, and afte will toe knocking all the time. The Jewel mav be in other hands part of the season, as it is understood 'Trot" Willetts will be racinAileen this season in view of the Sanders Cup contest being held on the Waitemata at the end of Januarv. The new V class Willetts is building for B. Schmidt, owner ot .Martha S., is nearly .finished, and may be ready for opening day. She should be in the first flight when she gets 'her gaff sail into form. Mauutere is now owned at St. Helier's Bay, but will race as usual The T class will again be a hot one, although it .has gone off a bit. Treasure and Salome, SyMln and Valet will have a new opponent in the boat recently finished by W. Rogers for Mr. Parkcs. The other racing classes, S and Z, have few if any new tooats this ■season, the majority being built all for the keel class. The 22-footers will be as keen as ever, and Omatere should have another successful run.
