STEADY PROGRESS.

AUCKLAND MANUFACTURERS. YEAR'S ACTIVITY REVIEWED. Congratulations on the steady progress made and the very satisfactory results attained during the year are conveyed to members in the annual report which is to be submitted at the annual meeting of the Auckland Manufacturers' Association on November 5.

The report, which is submitted on behalf of the committee by the president, Mr. J. A. C. Allum, and the secretary,. Mr. J. Findlay, commented that in the past four years it had been difficult to increase membership, but a better tone was now prevailing and there was every indication that a substantial increase would be obtained during the ensuing year. The number on the roll now stood at 260. Many years of propaganda was producing satisfactory results and there was a growing demand for New Zealand-made goods. In a number of instances manufacturers had been requested to brand their articles "Made in New Zealand." Mention was made of the need to induce members of Parliament to visit factories as soon as possible after the election, and it was pointed out that pay envelopes provided a good method of Urging workers to purchase the goods made by their fellow employees. Approximatelp 100,000 envelopes with appropriate slogans were supplied during the year. Success of Exhibition.

The Auckland Winter Exhibition continued to provide one of the beat opportunities for manufacturers to show the extent and variety of articles made in the Dominion. The July fixture was a distinct improvement on those of the past three or four years, and the finan-

cial results were very satisfactory. Advice had been ■ received from the Manufacturers' Federation that the request to the Government for legislation for the co-ordination of industries had been withdrawn. The association had recommended-to the federation that all questions of legislation should be deferred until next year, when, if considered advisable, it could be dealt with by a new Parliament with some years' security ahead, and further that in the meantime information be sought from other countries where legislation of a similar nature might have been in operation. The balance-sheet reveals that the association is in a sound financial position. The sum of £432, it is stated, was added to the accumulated fund, which now amounted to £4990.
