IN HAWKE'S BAY.

CAMPAIGN OPENS QUIETLY. LARGE AREAS COVERED. (By. Telegraph.—Special Correspondent.) NAPIER, this day. Campaigning in the Hawke's Bay district has opened quietly though none the lefts seriously. Of the four electorates—Napier, Hawke's Bay, Waipawa and Pahiatua—which are either wholly or partly in the province, Napier is the only one which does not embrace rural areas. In the remaining, three, candidates have opened their campaigns by visiting the minor country townships or settlements, as well as factories, public works camps and timber mills. Few meetings will be held in the larger centres, such as Napier, Hastings, Waipukurau and Waipawa, until the later stages of the campaign are reached. The Waipawa and Hawke's Bay electorates, being the largest in New Zealand, involve extensive travelling on the part of candidates, and some who are covering the rural localities exhaustively will probably travel some thousands of miles before polling day. This makes campaigning a wearying business. The Hawke's Bay electorate, for instance, takes in Hastings and a fair amount of the surrounding countryside and extends northwards as far as Tuai, near Waikaremoana. Of that tract, however, Napier, which is a separate constituency, and Wairoa township, which is part of Gisborne, are carved out. The township of Havelock North, however, though less than four miles from Hastings, is not included in Hawke's Bay, and instead forms part of the Waipawa electorate, which extends in the south beyond Waipukurau. - Napier, Hawke's Bay and Waipawa are all being strongly contested. Mr. W. E. Barnard, the sitting Labour member, is opposed in Napier by Mr. N. R. Jacobsen (Democrat), Mr. F. B. Logan (National Government) and Mr. W. Woods (Communist). In Hawke's Bay Mr.. H. Campbell, the sitting member, again represents the Government, and is opposed by Mr. E. L. Cullen (Labour). Mr. A. E. Jull, Government member for Waipawa, faces three other candidates, Messrs. W. L. Barker (Democrat), J. D. Ormond, jun. (Independent Nationalist) and H. M. Christie (Labour). In Pahiatua Sir Alfred Ransom is opposed by Messrs. R. A. Gower (Labour) and D. H. McGhie (Democrat):
