BACK TO GAOL.
SALESMAN'S FRAUDS. MANY VALUELESS CHEQUES. APPEAL BY COUNSEL. A salesman, Albert William Burton, aged 38, who, on Monday pleaded guilty to 35 charges of false pretences by obtaining a large sum of money and goods by means of valueless cheques, was. sentenced by Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., in the Police Court to-day.
. Mr. A. Hall Skelton, for Burton, eaid that it was in Burton's favour that he gave Detective Allsopp every assistance in clearing up the matters. "Burton instructed me to dispose of his car and other assets," said counsel. "I hope to have enough money to pay those whom he defrauded between 7/ and 10/ in the £, which is regarded as a good dividend in a bankruptcy. I would ask your Worship to take these facts into consideration."
"I've seen this man's record and I've also seen the probation officer, Mr. Campbell," eaid the magistrate. "Burton is not long out of prison when he commits all these 35 offences. He will be sentenced to six months' imprisonment, to be followed by twelve months' reformative detention."
