BROWN, EWING COMPANY. REDUCED PROFIT. (By Telegraph.—Special to " Star.") DUNEDIN, this clay. The 34th annual report of Brown, Ewing Company, Limited, drapers, states that the results of the year's trading show a profit of £72 18/4. This reduction is to some extent due to the fact that writing down of stocks has been heavier than usual. The dividend on preference shares at the rate of 5 per cent per annum will be paid, and the directors also recommend payment of a dividend on ordinary shares at the rate of 2% per cent. After, payment c>f dividends the profit and loss appropriation account will be in debit to the extent of £4249 8/9, and in order to provide for this it has been decided to transfer from the reserve account to profit and loss appropriation account the sum of £4500. This will then leave the appropriation account in credit to the amount of £250 11/3. Reserves after this transfer will stand at £18,292 7/11, representing surplus profits from previous years. SMITH AND SMIJH, LTD. DIVIDEND OF 5 PER CENT. The accounts of Smith and Smith, Ltd., Wellington, for the year ended June 30 show a net profit of £10,797, compared with £13.203 earned in the previous year and a loss of £377 in 1933. It is proposed to pay a dividend of 5 per cent on ordinary shares, the first since 1930. During the year arrears of preference dividend were paid and allowance has been made in the accounts for the current; year's payment. The company has a paid capital of £139,500 and reserves total £65,770.
