Hamilton Irvine and Miss Irvine (Gisborne) and Miss L. Dawson (Rotorua). SOCIAL GATHERINGS. An enjoyable afternoon was held at the home at Northcote of Mr. and Mrs. D. P. O'Leary, at which the guests of honour were Mr. and Mrs. Alan Donald, who both addressed the gathing. Mrs. Donald was presented with a bouquet. Others present included:— Mesdames K. P. Featherstone, J. Major, G. F. Curtis. A. J. Grant, C. Stewart, G. E. La Roche, A. Neil,'W. I. Muirhead and A. Campbell. * m m m Mrs. Wetherill was hostess at a delightful bridge party given in the reception room at Geo. Court and Sons, Ltd., in honour of Mrs. Lawson, who has just returned from a trip abroad. Among those present were:—Mrs. Lawson, guest of honour, Mesdames Aley, Guthrie, Tinling, Howden, jun., Wall, Howden, McCabe, Abbott, Shirley, Wallace, Lindstiom, Stewart, Weatherill, Darroeh, Misses Lawson and Guthrie. • • • • The Friendly Bridge Club held a bridge party in George Court and Sons, Ltd., tea rooms. Amongst those present were: Mesdames D. Palmer, Shore, sen., Shore, jun., Nealie, Bradshaw, Waite, Jordon, Engel, Butler, Stretton, Appleyard, Carde, Dickson, Radford, Marrett, Thomas, Cleal, Wright, McNa lara, G. Spinks, McPike and McLeod. The prize-winners' were: Mrs. E. Shaw, Miss Waite; hidden numbers, Mrs. McLeod. * * * * A delightful party was held at "Glen Ayr," Gardner Road, One Tree Hill, the residence of Mrs. A. Cerutty. Tulips, ranunculi and rhododendrons made the rooms gay, and Mrs. Cerutty wore, to receive her guests, a frock of black lace. Miss Cerutty was in green and rose floral ninon. Two largo rooms opening into one were used for dancing, while other diversions were songs and games. The guests numbered about fifty, and among those present were: Mrs. V. Macky, Misses Alfreda Suter, B. Suter, May Dransfield, Marion McDonald, \Vendy Tancred, R. Bowles, Linda de Renzy, Joan Charlton, Mavis McCulloch, J. Moody, Joy Hammer, Dina Isaacs, Alison Laery, G, McConnell, ClySo Griffin, Rosanne Lovell, Noel Worthy, Elsie Tattley,.Freda Walsh, and Anita Webster. MISSIONARY JUBILEE. CELEBRATION AT ONEHUNGA. A gathering or women assembled in the Presbyterian Hall at OneTiunga last week, when a missionary afternoon was held in connection with the Church jubilee celebrations. A programme fitting to the occasion was capably arranged by Mrs. H. A. Stoupe. The hall was decorated with flowers and three tables of beautiful Oriental work were on view, The' chairman, Rev. L. McMaster,- welcomed the guests, some of whom had travelled long distances to attend. 'Among those present were Miss Watson and Mrs. McSkimming, foundation members who helped to launch the Missionary Union twenty-six years ago. Miss Watson, who was the first secretary, read the minutes of the inaugural meeting held in 190 D. The present secretary, Miss A. Ramsay, then gave a brief resume of tlie history and work of the union from its inception to the present time. Mrs. Hutchinson conveyed to the gathering the congratulations of the Auckland association and also brought greetings from her own Church at Balmoral. Mrs. Mawson, ror 20 years a missionary in China, spoke in appreciation of all the work the union had done in . helping to spread the gospel in foreign fields. When tea had been served by members of the branch the 26 candles on the birthday cake, which was presented by Mesdames Beckett and Stoupe, were lighted by Mrs. McSkimming and Miss Watson, the foundation members, and the cake was cut by the present president, Mrs. McMaster. During the afternoon solos were sung by Mesdames Poole and Bissett, Miss Freda Cook acting as accompanist at the piano. -An interesting one-act play, directed by Miss Joan Hussey aiid performed by ttfe girls of the Busy Bee, was staged successfully. WOMEN IN POLITICS. That Auckland women arc taking a practical interest in the forthcoming elections was emphasised yesterday morning, when a very enthusiastic committee meeting, convened by Mrs. Nello Porter, was held in the Remuera Public Library committee room, to formulate practical working plans. Those present were: Mesdames Nello Porter, G. Hogan, F; Seccombe, C. Colson, C. B. Buddie, L. Dodd, Heath-Priest, Clifton Lewis, M. J. Scott-Young and Miss E. Walker.

INAUGURAL MEETING. BUSINESS GIRLS' CLUB. An eminently successful function was held in Milne and Choyce's reception ball yesterday, when the first of a series of fortnightly luncheon talks for business girls was given. The reason for the inauguration of this series is to enable the business girls of Auckland to meet prominent visitors from overseas. The manageress of tho Milne and Clioyce tearooms, Miss Gladys Armstrong, who has recently returned from Sydney, was responsible for the organisation of the function, which was run .on the same lines as those conducted by several large firms in Sydney. The guests of honour at yesterday's luncheon were Miss Madge Elliott and Mr. Cyril Ritchard, of the J. C. Williamson musical comedy company. Miss Elliott wore a smart navy Angora wool ensemble with silver fox furs and a navy hat. During the function she was presented with a sheaf of pink tulips by Mr. V. Chovcc on behalf of the business girls of Auckland. Others at the official table included Mr. s. Milne', Mr. R. Milne, Mr. V. Clioyce and Mr. E. 11. Robinson. In welcoming tho guests Mr V. Clioyce mentioned that Miss Elliott and Mr. Ritchard were foundation members of tho movement in Sydney and lie expressed the gratitude of the firm and of tho girls that their guests had been able to spare time to be present. He briefly outlined the aims of the club and said it was proposed to have a lecturer to speak to tho girls each fortnight on Subjects of general interest to business women. Mr. Ritchard thanked Mr. Clioyce and the gathering for the warm welcome they had extended to them, and remarked on tho coincidence that he and Miss Elliott had been in Sydney some . years ago when the inaugural meeting | of a similar club was hold there. He went on to speak of the broadening .11r '"i.ieiicc of travel and of meeting* > who had travelled, and emphasised the ( fact that travel not only makes one ; appreciate other people's points of view but also teaches 0110 to appreciate the . best in one's own home. He concluded by expressing the hope that the club would be well established and flourishing next time he and his wife camc to Auckland. NURSES' HOME. HEW SISTER APPOINTED. From seven applicants the Auckland Hospital Board yesterday appointed Miss nelcn MacDiarniid sister in charge of the Nurses' Home. Miss MacDiarniid was trained at the Waikato Hospital, whero she holds tho position of tutor lister. In 1024 she passed her State registration examination and in 1028 took a post-graduate course in nursing and obtained a diploma in hospital administration and teaching. In 1932 she took a course in maternity training and this year in Plunket training. Miss Irene M. Henderson has been appointed tutor sister. The selection was made by the board in committee bv a ballot from three applicants. TAMAKI YACHT CLUB. A well-attended bridge and "500" 1 evening was held on Monday in the i Tamaki Yacht Clubhouse. The highest I scoro at bridge was won by Mrs. Allen j White and Mr. Shalto Smith, the hidden number going to Mrs. Aspinall. The "500" winners were Mrs. Goodison and Mr. J. Appleyard, Mrs. Watkins winning tho hidden number.. Among those present were: Mesdnmes Moore, Patorson. Marshall White, Armstrong, Williams. Isemonger, Soper, Dean, Aspinall, de Senna, Lawrence, R. ANNUAL DANCE. WAITEMATA GOLF CLUB. The Masonic Hall, Devonport, presented a festive scene last evening when the Waitemata Golf Club held its annual dance. Streamers in the club colours of green and gold adorned the walls while large bowls of arum lilies and foliage added colourful relief. Multi-coloured flags draped the room in which bridge was played and vases of Iceland poppies and asparagus fern provided a gay touch in the supper room. The guests were received by the president, Mrs. G. Gribbin, who wore black clustered satin. Among those present were: Mrs. Carl Prime (captain), in turquoise chiffon velvet; Mrs. A.
